In fact when we are healthy, these ‘bad’ microbes are far outnumbered by ‘good’ bacteria and it’s only when we stray from healthy eating and lifestyle choices that these ‘bad’ microbes get out of control. As candida spreads it changes to a fungal form and grows roots called mycelia which damage the tissues of the body and enter the bloodstream.
Common symptoms such as irritable bowel, athlete’s foot, sinusitis, joint pain, bloating, fatigue, depression, food sensitivity and an inability to concentrate are some of the many health problems that might be associated with an overgrowth of candida, also known as yeast infection. Add a weakened immune system to the mix and you will have increased tendency to allergies and a decreased resistance to infection.
So why is candida so widespread? Basically it has a lot to do with our diet and lifestyle habits as well as some other contributing factors like the overuse of antibiotics. Because candida’s survival and growth in this fungal state depends a lot on what we eat, we need to change our diet and starve candida of one of its favourite foods, sugar! Considering that the average person consumes nearly his body-weight in sugar every year, it’s not surprising so many people are suffering in one way or another.
However, sugar is not the only cause of yeast overgrowth. Foods that contain yeast, refined grains, preservatives and anything fermented are just some of the foods that should be avoided when following an anti-candida diet. Although an anti-candida diet is one of the most important steps that need to be taken to beat a yeast overgrowth, it is one of a few other necessary measures that work together to permanently annihilate this health hazard.
Tackling a candida overgrowth takes perseverance and determination. It isn’t easy, especially in the beginning. But the initial challenges of following a change of diet and lifestyle habits are short-lived and once you begin to feel relief from your symptoms and your body regains its energy and vitality, you realize that it’s worth every effort.
